ICLE Pittsburgh Moves to New Location;
Applications Now Being Accepted
(HARRISBURG) - The Institute for Community Leadership in Education will commence its fifth year in the Pittsburgh region in a new home. This leadership development program, sponsored by The Education Policy and Leadership Center, will meet at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit on the Riverfront in Homestead beginning on September 14, 2004.

The Institute is designed for current and emerging community leaders who want to increase their knowledge about important statewide and local education policy issues. Six interactive seminars will introduce participants to issues surrounding No Child Left Behind, education funding, school governance, what works to promote student achievement, and building school-community partnerships. Participants also will learn about the policymaking process in Pennsylvania and how they can become effective advocates for children. Applications are encouraged from parents, business and professional persons, educators, civic leaders, local elected officials, prospective school board candidates, and others.

Douglas Graham, a parent advocate and Pittsburgh ICLE graduate, said, "The ICLE was the most comprehensive, interesting and just plain fun introduction to the world of education that I have ever been exposed to. My eyes have been opened to new ways of looking at complex issues that affect our children and our future. I have a more nuanced view of some of the most pressing issues facing education today, thanks to the ICLE."

The ICLE was first implemented in Pittsburgh in 2000 and has expanded to include sites in Harrisburg, the Lehigh Valley, and Berks County. A new Central Susquehanna Valley site will begin this fall. For more information, see www.eplc.org/icle.html.

The Education Policy and Leadership Center is an independent, non-partisan and not-for-profit organization established in 1998 and based in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The mission of the Center is to encourage and support the use of more effective state-level education policies to improve student learning in grades K-12, increase the effective operation of schools, and enhance educational opportunities for citizens of all ages.
